U.K June 30, 2026 - Marcus Rashford's Manchester United career may not be over after all.
Just weeks after speculation suggested the England international had played his final game for the Red Devils, Manchester United have made direct contact with Rashford's representatives to discuss reintegrating the forward into Michael Carrick's first-team squad ahead of the 2026/27 season. The discussions mark a significant shift in the relationship between player and club and could pave the way for one of the summer's most intriguing storylines.
According to multiple reports, talks between Manchester United and Rashford's camp have taken place over the past 24 hours in a positive and constructive atmosphere. Rather than rushing into another transfer, both parties have agreed that the immediate priority is for the academy graduate to return for pre-season training under Carrick before making any long-term decisions later in the transfer window.
The development comes after Barcelona decided against activating the £26 million purchase option included in Rashford's loan agreement. Although the Spanish champions were pleased with his performances during his spell in La Liga, they ultimately opted to strengthen their attack elsewhere, leaving Rashford to return to Old Trafford. Manchester United have made it clear they are not interested in sanctioning another loan move, preferring either a permanent transfer or a genuine reintegration into the squad.
For Rashford, the change in management has also altered the situation considerably.
The 28-year-old's relationship with former manager Ruben Amorim had effectively brought his Manchester United career to a standstill, resulting in loan spells away from the club. However, Michael Carrick's appointment has created an entirely different dynamic. Carrick has worked closely with Rashford in the past, first as a teammate and later as a member of United's coaching staff, and is believed to be open to giving the forward a fresh opportunity.
Sources close to the negotiations indicate that Carrick is happy to welcome Rashford back into the squad for pre-season and assess his role over the coming weeks rather than making an immediate decision on his future. That approach appears to have been well received by the player, who is also understood to be willing to begin the season at Manchester United if the right transfer proposal does not materialise.
Crucially, neither side is treating the reintegration as confirmation that Rashford will remain at Old Trafford beyond this summer.
Instead, the plan is to restore a professional working relationship while leaving the door open for a permanent transfer should a suitable offer arrive. Rashford remains under contract until 2028, meaning Manchester United retain full control over any negotiations with interested clubs.
Barcelona have not completely ruled out revisiting a move for the England international in the future, but their preference would reportedly be another loan arrangement, an option Manchester United are currently unwilling to consider. Other clubs have been linked with Rashford throughout the summer, but no advanced negotiations are believed to be taking place at this stage.
